NEWS: Volkswagen XL1 plug-in hybrid enters production

22nd February 2013 | BY NSNP

We posted pictures of the Volkswagen XL1 hybrid road testing back in September last year and we can now confirm that it will enter production in the first half of this year.

The futuristic looking hybrid is powered by a two cylinder 48bhp turbo-diesel engine and a 27bhp electric motor and will reportedly hit 60mph in a respectable 12.7 seconds (that’s about the same as a 1.4 VW Polo Bluemotion). This slippery little VW bantamweight weighs in at just 795kg and has a drag co-efficient of 0.189, which results in a staggering 314mpg fuel economy!  To put that in to perspective, you could drive from The Houses of Parliament in London to The Colosseum in Rome on £24 worth of fuel…who needs planes?

The XL1 will sit at 70mph without breaking a sweat and if you’re feeling a bit Colin McRae, you could wring it’s neck for 100mph. There’s no word on the price yet and we’re still not sure if it’s going to be available in the UK, but the German automaker has the permissions to hand build 1000 units at their Osnabruck facility.

What do you make of the XL1? Is there a place for this TRON-esque hypermiler? Hit us up in the comments below…
