Ford Mondeo TDCi mk3 2.0 very poor acceleration

    Hi,
Newby to this site and request some help please.

My Mondeo TDCi has very poor acceleration and this started when the air temperature was around 7 degrees C and below. The turbo was not coming in when accerating. Engine seemed to be restricted to around 2000 rpm when accerating.
This has now developed to it happening all the time now even with air temperatures above 7 deg C.
I have noticed looking under the bonnet that on start up the electrically operated lever to the turbocharger moves fully in one direction and the when accelerating and decelleration moves back and forth freely. After about 5 seconds of engine running this lever is then comanded fully back and the engine appears less responsive. I have checked that the turbo is freely spinning .

The engine management light is now on
I intend on changing fuel ,air and oil filters and using Wynns treatment for the fuel and oil system systems in case it is down to the oil system being overdue a change.

Does anyone have any similar experience/ advice.

    Many thanks

The EML coming on probably means the engine has gone into limp mode. Get the fault codes that are (hopefully) stored read to give you an idea of where to start looking.

If you want to go in blind I would start with the MAF sensor then go from there

I used electric contact cleaner to clean the MAF sensors. Use a cotton bud dipped in the stuff and go gently the sensor wires are very fine. I'd recommend cleaning the egr valve too (used carb cleaner). What year is the car is it euro 3 or euro 4 emissions? If it's euro 3 (no electric plug on the egr) fit a blanking plate (2mm thick minimum) between the valve and the metal pipe that runs across the front of the engine block. If it's euro 4 take the plastic cover off and rotate the gear wheels to open the valve to make sure the opening is fully cleaned and it can close properly with no hinderance from carbon.
Have you noticed any extra smoke from the tailpipe? It's worth checking the boost pipes for splits, main culprit is the intercooler - egr valve pipe. When changing the fuel filter go for a Ford, Delphi or Bosch replacement only, other makes don't appear to be made to th esame exact spec and can cause fuelling problems.
For clearing the code have a look on ebay there are plenty of code readers around 20 on there which will clear the code.

Thanks everyone for all the advice.

I have just refitted the MAF but still same symptoms. Engine starts Ok electrically operated control arm to Turbo moves from rearmost stop position to fully forward and modulates in response to throttle increase and decrease . Then after approximately 10 seconds the arm is driven back to the rearmost stop position and stays there regardless of accelerator position. Is this normal or is the turbo being commanded to off load position ?
There has been some smoke when accelerating in the past . The EGR valve is of the type that has an electrical connection to it

Can anyone recommend diagnostic equipment to read the fault

    Thanks again

I'm not sure on the turbo, but as your egr valve has an electric connection, I would seriously recommend removing the valve and cleaning it. If you have a laptop, get F Super you can plug in and get live readouts of what the injectors are doing etc as well as fault code reading and resets.

With any luck the clean egr will solve your problems and then you just need to reset the light.
