    Engine Management Light Stays On

Just changed the engine oil in my 306 HDi, & now the engine management light is on. I've used a slightly thicker oil than recommend could this be why the light is on? The car is coming up to 128k now.

maybe... Only thing you can do is get it on a code reader and see what it says.

As far as I know the engine won't be able to detect what type of oil it uses only level, temp and pressure is monitored.
I would go over the areas you have been working on and check there are no plugs loose etc....

surely a thicker oil could affect 1 of those readings at least... pressure that is...
But then would that throw the EML?

Unless the oil is too thick and it thinks the oil pump is knackered?

    Engine Management Light Stays On

Thicker oil will mean higher pressure, but the sensor will probably only pick up low pressure, so that shouldn't be the problem unless the thicker oil has done something to the pump....
Besides, is there not an oil light and engine management light?

Re: Engine Management Light Stays On

Unless the oil is really thick it should not make any difference, the oil pump is driven off the crank by a chain so plenty of torque available.
Code reading is ideal but if you don't have the equipment it could be expensive. What oil has been used I wonder? There should be an oil light and management light like tmagnet says so that's why I think its summit else.

    Oil light stays off.
I did move some wires out of the way, so I could get at the oil filter but didn't actually disconnect anything. Peugeot recommend 5W30 fully synthetic, but the engine has been a little noisey the last few thousand miles. So I put some 10W40 fully synthetic in it. Which has quietn'd the engine down quite alot. I have used an aftermarket oil filter, which is not recommend apparently. The genuine one is meant to have some sort of valve in it.

I think there might be a dodgy connection on one of the plugs you moved.

I got sick of paying to get the fault codes read so bought something like thisand with my laptop I started reading and resetting it myself.

The filter will be fine as long as you change them when you should.

On a side note did you take your profile pic yourself or find it on the net?

There was one more thing, I disconnected the throttle sensor while the engine was running then put it back again, this may have activated the management light. But surely the light should go out again.
