Trident Iceni Grand Tourer - The worlds most economical supercar?

28th August 2012 | BY NSNP

When we heard about a new diesel supercar capable of 200mph and up to 2000 miles on a single tank of fuel we let out a sigh, “If only” we said. It’s not a stretch to believe that a diesel engined car would hit 200mph, if it was teamed up with the right chassis and aero mods - look at the Darkside Jetta for example, that thing is only 46mph short and it’s as slippery as a house brick. But 2000 miles on a single tank of fuel? We weren’t sold, a car like that could only be the thing of myth and legend.

Or could it?

You’d be forgiven if you’ve not heard of Trident Vehicles Group as they’ve had a somewhat eventful past, going in and out of business since the seventies. But this time around they seem to be on to something special, The Iceni Grand Tourer.

The small team based in Norfolk have designed and developed a diesel powered supercar with seemingly physics defying statistics. The Iceni power plant is a 6.6 litre diesel V8 with an output of 430bhp and a disgusting 950lb/ft of torque. Or for those who would rather have the world spin backwards when they accelerate, rather than be propelled forwards, Trident will upgrade your Grand Tourer to 660bhp and 1050lb/ft. That’ll equate to a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of almost 200mph.

The diesel V8 has been designed to run on mineral diesel, bio diesel, palm oil and linseed oil. Plus due to ‘Torque Multiplication technology’ will average 69mpg at 70mph. That’s because at the UK speed limit, the tacho will be reading a paltry 980rpm, thus sipping whichever jungle juice you choose to feed it. Trident claim that given those performance figures, you should see 2000 miles between fuel stops - provided you drive said mileage at 70mph. By our calculations that must mean the Iceni would have to be fitted with a 127 litre fuel tank which equates to £187 of V-Power diesel per fill up. That sensationalist 2000 mile range becomes less impressive when you put it that way.

We’re extremely intrigued by this car and will be reporting back with more information as soon as we’ve got it…

The Trident Iceni Grand Tourer will set you back £75,000 and be on show at Salon Prive 2012 from 5th September.
